Developing Your Company Leadership

Seminar Outline

Developing Your Company Leadership is designed and taught by Professor Michael Useem, co-director of Wharton Executive Education’s long-standing leadership development program, The Leadership Journey.

Economies around the world will continue to shift in the months ahead, triggering an ongoing barrage of new challenges. What made corporate executives successful as leaders in the past may not ensure their success in the future. Participants will learn how to reinvigorate their leadership with new knowledge — knowledge they can leverage to lead organizations in uncertain and aggressive global markets.

Intensifying competition and demands for high performance are forcing organizations worldwide to become more flexible, more customer-focused and more fast-acting. Companies are finding that these initiatives require effective leadership and a supportive culture. These have become critical in an era of greater uncertainty and change. The challenge is to build well-led teams throughout the organizations. This requires a capacity to think strategically, communicate persuasively, and act decisively.

Seminar Benefits

This intensive full-day seminar will draw on material from Wharton’s The Leadership Journey, which will revitalize participants’ leadership skills with practical wisdom drawn from the issues that leaders have faced during critical moments in history. It will include team exercises; case discussions; and hands-on problem solving. Participants will learn the imperatives of effective leadership and decision-making — knowledge that is pivotal to their future and that of their organizations.

Participants will gain a fresh approach to leadership by:

  • Challenging their current assumptions about leadership;
  • Discovering what to keep, what to change, and what to further develop;
  • Exchanging perspectives with peers;
  • Walking in the footsteps of other leaders;
  • Recognizing strengths and weaknesses of their teams;
  • Creating the strategic context and company culture needed for good decisions.

About the Speaker

Professor Michael Useem is the William and Jacalyn Egan Professor of Management and the Director of the Center for Leadership and Change Management at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

He has completed studies of corporate organization, ownership, governance, restructuring, and leadership. Professor Useem has authored and co-authored several business and leadership publications including The Leader’s Checklist: 15 Mission-Critical Principles; The Go Point; The Leadership Moment; Investor Capitalism and The India Way: How India’s Top Business Leaders Are Revolutionizing Management.

Drawing on challenging moments when difficult decisions have been faced by company managers, Professor Useem identifies what is required to lead during a period of growth and change, and how to strengthen those leadership capacities throughout the ranks.

From his development work with hundreds of managers and executives in leadership programs in the United States and abroad, and from interviews with managers confronting a range of critical moments, Professor Useem has concluded that their experience points to a core of just 15 mission-critical leadership principles that vary surprisingly little among companies or countries. In this program, he will identify and anchor those core principles in the actions of managers facing challenges, ranging from and driving growth and making strategic decisions; to overcoming financial crisis and rescuing the 33 miners in Chile.

Professor Useem offers courses on management, leadership, and corporate governance to MBA and senior executive audiences in the United States, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. He has worked extensively on leadership development and governance with many organizations in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. From the slopes of Mount Everest to dozens of executive suites, Professor Useem has engaged with a wide variety of managers on leadership development. He is working with the World Economic Forum on initiatives to identify ways of preventing, mitigating, and responding to significant enterprise risks.
